MOSCOW, Russia | Russian President Vladimir Putin and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow used a meeting at the Kremlin to underscore the role of religion in preserving national unity, as Russia faces continuing geopolitical pressure and international confrontation.
The two men met on the occasion of the Patriarch’s name day, with the discussion focusing on social cohesion, interreligious relations and the stability of Russia’s multiethnic society.
During the meeting, Putin called for the experience and influence of the Patriarch to be utilized in strengthening the unity of the Russian people, stressing the importance of maintaining balanced relations among religious communities and Christian Churches within the country.
Responding to the Russian president, Patriarch Kirill argued that faith becomes especially critical during periods when ideological arguments lose their effectiveness, describing religion as a decisive factor in preventing social fragmentation.
The Patriarch also drew an indirect comparison with other countries, portraying Russia as a rare example of a state capable of pursuing scientific and technological advancement without abandoning its spiritual identity and traditional values.
The exchange once again highlighted the close relationship between the Russian state and the Russian Orthodox Church, particularly since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, where religious rhetoric and appeals to patriotism have increasingly accompanied official political discourse.
