Man arrested in Thessaloniki for online threats against Mount Athos abbot

Greek police arrested a 44-year-old for posting a social media comment urging violence against a Mount Athos abbot. The man was later released pending further prosecutorial review.

THESSALONIKI, Greece | Greek police have arrested a 44-year-old man in Thessaloniki accused of posting an online comment inciting violence against an abbot from Mount Athos.

According to authorities, the incident was reported in July, prompting a preliminary investigation. The suspect allegedly published the message on a social media account linked to a church-related website, urging followers to commit acts of violence — even suggesting harm to the cleric’s life.

Following a digital trace analysis, police identified and detained the man in Thessaloniki. He was later released on the verbal order of the prosecutor, while the case file has been forwarded to the Thessaloniki Prosecutor’s Office for further action.
