After a long battle with cancer, the senior hierarch of the Church of Greece passed away on Tuesday at the hospital where he had been receiving care in recent days.

Metropolitan Dionysios of Corinth, 72, died after years of struggling with cancer, including extended treatment in the United States where he underwent several surgeries in an effort to combat the illness.

His final public liturgical appearance took place this past May, during the celebration of Saint John the Russian at the pilgrimage shrine in Euboea. There, he concelebrated with members of his spiritual family from the Metropolis of Chalkida—where he had previously served for decades.

The election of his successor will be held during the upcoming regular session of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece in October.
